Hector survived the war - but not without incident. I have been contacted by Jennifer, his niece, who told me "Uncle Hec's tin hat used to hang on the wall of the sitting room, with a hole right through it where a bullet cut a groove in the top of Hector's head."
Hector's war-time experience had other long-term effects. He came across the monastery where; he partook enthusiastically - and awoke in a sewage farm. He did not touch another drop of that liqueur again!
